The Empress
Mother Nature
The Empress is Major Arcana number 3, the one who gives life and physical form, and nurtures The Fool along their journey through the Arcana. It is the source of creation for the Tarot deck, and is associated with mothers, farmers, protectors, and caregivers of all kinds. The Tarot interpretation of the Empress often involves the creation of something, a situation that has come to fruition, or a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure.

The Empress Card Meaning
The Empress card is about abundance and fertility, which can be represented by growth, the harvest, or simply nature itself. Like nature, the Empress has a dark and destructive side, which she mainly uses to protect what can’t protect itself. She can represent a person who gives life, a guardian who helps you flourish, or a physical possession that you have poured yourself into or sacrificed much to obtain. In a personal growth reading, she often represents someone who is helping you on your journey, perhaps providing shelter or security so that you can flourish: Try a Self Analysis Reading Here.
Symbolism in the Empress
The Empress is symbolically connected to the planet earth, fruit, pregnancy, and the harvest. Whereas Major Arcana number 2, The High Priestess, is symbolically linked to the seed, the Empress is associated with the fully grown fruit, juicy and ripe and bursting with flavor. In many ways this card is the opposite of Major Arcana number 4, The Emperor, and the two together rule the Tarot a bit like a queen and king. The Empress is commonly associated with Venus in the context of Astrology, both having to do with physical being and sensation, as well as beauty and pleasure. Like her number, 3, the Empress provides energy and promotes growth.
The Shield: Fierce Protector
The shield resting at the base of the Empress’s throne represents her willingness to defend anyone and anything that she deems worthy of preserving. It is not in her hands, showing that it is not her natural stance or preferred method of dealing with a problem, but she is more than willing if push comes to shove. The phrase tiger mom embodies the Empress when she is in this mood.
The Pillow: Comfort and Pleasure
The Empress rests on a large pillow, reminding us of how she appreciates the comforts and pleasures of life. The Empress wants you to enjoy what is there, and if a little extra padding helps, then she sees no reason for you to deny yourself that. But she does not get too comfortable; notice how she leans forward, ready to grab the shield and leap into action if needed.
Running Water: Creative Outpouring
One of the most important meanings of the Empress is creative output, which is akin to a rushing river that cannot be stopped, but can be shaped or directed over time. This is partly why she protects so fiercely, so that those in her charge are free to think, create, and produce, free from distraction or worrying about their safety. The Empress creates a warm and safe environment from which you are safe to explore and be vulnerable, both of which are essential for true creation.
The Empress Card Reversed Meaning
The Empress reversed can mean emptiness, disappointment, the loss of something you thought safe, or writer’s block. You may be forced to do something you are not comfortable with, or some anticipated pleasure is denied or turns out to not be what you had hoped.

What does the Empress represent in a Love or Relationship reading?
The Empress primarily concerns herself with the physical side of a relationship. Do both partners feel comfortable around each other, and in the environments that the relationship is taking place? Maybe someone feels less than safe sometimes, or a place you spend a lot of time together is not inviting or conducive to connection. The Empress is asking you to examine these factors and decide if they are adding to, or subtracting from, the health of the relationship.
What does the Empress symbolize in Career and Finances?
Given her association with production and pleasure, the Empress can be a nice card to see in a career or financial reading. However she can also be a warning that you are playing it too safe, or perhaps have surrounded yourself by people who will only tell you yes. Are you producing your best work, or work that simply meets someone else’s standards? Greater rewards may await you if you make sure your output is genuine, efficient, and comes from a place of confidence. The Empress is telling you that you have what it takes, but at the same time is asking if you are actually using what you have to its fullest potential!
What guidance does the Empress have for everyday life?
The Empress knows how to enjoy what she has. Even small comforts can become big comforts, if well appreciated. She is a reminder that a little indulgence is OK, as it can provide sustenance for when the times get tougher (as they always do). At the same time, though, she is warning you not to get complacent, or too attached to comfort. There may be work to do, or people who need protecting, and you must always be ready to leave safety and comfort to perform this duty when called. The Empress knows how to flow freely back and forth between these modes of living, and wants you to do the same.
