The Emperor

Ruler of the Tarot

The Emperor is Major Arcana number 4, the one who rules the Tarot deck, and keeps the The Fool on their path by enforcing boundaries and restrictions. It is the source of order and logic for the Tarot deck, and is associated with fathers, kings, governors, and the military. The Tarot interpretation of the Emperor often involves the enforcing of a rule, running in to a limitation, or an interaction with a leader.

The Emperor Card Meaning

The Emperor card is about logic and reason, which often takes the form of rules and restrictions. The Emperor can represent the person enforcing those rules, such as the police, or represent the rules themselves, such as gravity. He is ruthless in his application of the rules, giving no favor to those he likes and no extra scrutiny to those he doesn’t. He represents an unchanging and uncaring reality, and keeps a watchful eye over the borders of his empire. Symbolism in the Emperor

The Emperor is symbolically connected to boundaries, deduction, thrones, and battle. While Major Arcana number 11, Justice, also represents the fair enforcement of rules, the Emperor is more about natural law or inevitable consequences, while Justice pertains more to the laws that society chooses to place on itself. In many ways this card is the opposite of Major Arcana number 3, The Empress, and the two together rule the Tarot a bit like a queen and king. The Emperor is commonly associated with the zodiac sign Aries in the context of Astrology, being linked through leadership and war.

The Throne: Sharp and Hard

Unlike the Empress’s pillow, the Emperor rests on an angular stone throne, with no padding or even curves. This represents his unwillingness to bend, and also his exactitude. Bearing the number four he is stable but also possibly boring, much like his functional but undecorated throne. He does not need to be comfortable, for his thoughts are always extended outward into his kingdom, ensuring that all is as it should be.

The Rod: The Responsibility to Rule

The Emperor is saddled with the responsibility of ruling the Tarot deck, a duty in which he takes neither pleasure nor discomfort. He feels the weight of this responsibility, but it does not hold him back because he knows that he can do what is required of him. He never misses, never forgets, and never allows for exceptions. The rod he holds in one hand represents his rulership, and lets those who live under his rule know who is in charge.

The Orb: Holding the World

The Emperor’s rule is absolute and far-reaching, represented by the orb in his other hand, which could also be a globe. Physically there is boundary to the Emperor’s rule, as it extends throughout the entire world (or even universe), but it is a rule composed of logic and reason, and therefore does not extend into the realm of thoughts or emotions. Thus the orb in his hand is a reminder that his reach touches the whole world, but also only the whole world.

The Emperor Card Reversed Meaning

The Emperor reversed can mean the flaunting of rules, the end of an organization or its leader, or the failure to do something that you needed to do. It often shows up when you have incorrectly deduced something, or are failing to put two and two together.

What does the Emperor represent in a Love or Relationship reading?

The Emperor is asking you to define the boundaries of your relationship. Are your boundaries compatible with that of your partner? Are both of your boundaries safe, healthy, and intentional? If we do not put conscious thought into our boundaries, they can slide over time; the Emperor wants you to make sure both your boundaries are serving you, and are steadily maintained. He can also be a warning that someone is trying to take charge of the relationship, or wants to be the ruler; while some disparity of responsibilities can be good, ultimately all members of a relationship should have a say that cannot be vetoed or dominated by the other.

What does the Emperor symbolize in Career and Finances?

The Emperor is a sign to take charge of your career or finances, instead of letting someone else decide for you. Even if you can’t be your own boss, that can mean taking the initiative, working things out in advance, and making sure you know exactly what you are responsible for and what you are not. The Emperor wants you to stick to your lane, but master it so that no one else can claim it for their own. While it can take time, the Emperor is telling you that this will pay off in the long run. You never know who is watching or taking notice, and what opportunities could arise from being the master of your own territory.

What guidance does the Emperor have for everyday life?

Each day we are given access to so much information, even if almost all of it seems useless or forgettable. The Emperor wants you to keep a keen eye out, and make sure that you are making any available deductions or inferences from this daily deluge. Often there are patterns, correlations, or secrets hidden in the little things, or in the tiny variations of the everyday; the Emperor is constantly searching through these to find out what can be deduced from them, and wants you to do the same. Tapping into his powers of analysis and reason, you can go one layer deeper and discover the patterns hiding behind the noise.
